The Five Best Hikes To See Fall Colors In The Smokies
Curling up with a good book and a cup of cider, gathering around bonfires late in the evening and visiting the pumpkin patch with your loved ones are a few things that make us look forward to the Autumn months. Similar to these, taking a relaxing hike through The Great Smoky Mountains to see the breathtaking fall colors is a staple in the brisk weather months. The national park is known as one of the most beautiful areas to view Autumn leaves and there are a few particular trails that words cannot do justice.
- Abrams Falls
This 5.2 mile long hike is beautiful year-round, but in the Fall this trail becomes ablaze with its colorful leaves. Abrams Falls is a picturesque waterfall, named after a Cherokee Chief who once lived just downstream. While this trail doesn’t allow pets, it’s a great, moderate hike for those looking forward to an afternoon amongst the golden leaves of the Smokies.
- Rich Mountain Loop
At 8.5 miles, this trail can be fairly strenuous and we suggest it only for more experienced hikers. However, the view and the elevation make this one of the best spots to see the Fall foliage, especially in the later Autumn months. As part of The Smoky Mountains world famous Cades Cove, this loop is also a great spot to visit other trails and historic sites before or after you start your hike.
- Baskins Creek Falls
If you are looking for an easier hike, this 3 mile loop is perfect! With cascading waterfalls and an easy path Baskins Creek Falls is a lovely way to spend an hour or two. This trail is also in a great location where you can easily drive to other trails and picnic areas just up the road under the Autumn leaves.
- Schoolhouse Gap
Schoolhouse Gap is another easy hike with gorgeous surroundings. In the spring, wildflowers decorate the ground but in the Fall the trees are what you should go to see. The Autumn colors are exquisite and make for the perfect quiet forest hike through the leaves. At 3.8 miles this is another trail you won’t want to miss.
- Charlies Bunion
Named after Charlie Conner by his good friend Horace, Charlies Bunion Trail leads to a beautiful view from an outcropping of rock. This spot offers one of the best vantage points of Fall foliage in the Smokies and even though it is more of a difficult trail at 8.1 miles and a high elevation it is well worth the trip to the top.
